Three friends, two schools, one lunch hour. On one side, 15-year-old Daniel stands in front of an attentive audience. He’s about to tell his story to the Gay-Straight Alliance at his new high school. His is a journey marked by homophobic bullying and intimidation at his old school. And on the other side, his friends Krystina and Jeremy look into an empty room. In the wake of Daniel’s departure, they’re trying to start their own Alliance and assuage their guilt. How can they support their friend in the face of adversity?
With these three intertwined voices, this translation of Outside, by Paul Dunn, takes a direct and unabashed look at the themes of homophobia and bullying in school. In a cinematic narrative, events mount suspensefully to a breaking point. A powerful play that raises essential issues around identity, self-acceptance and the power of friendship.
