Mainstage season

Tout ça

It starts with sounds syllables and repeated noises like a baby’s babbling. Then come words sentences and sensations that articulate first experience. A being is born from this torrent of words – a woman, in fact. At the end of her time on Earth, what will she have known? Faces skies pencils poems Kurt Cobain sex pain joy motherhood and endless labour. In sum, fragments of a remarkably ordinary life. For she is, after all, a woman just like anyone else.

This arresting monologue by British playwright Alistair McDowall moves through grand events and little yet universal realizations, capturing the essence of a woman’s journey in one deft breath. Carried by Évelyne Rompré’s commanding performance and reprised three times in Montreal since its first run of performances, Tout ça erects a deeply moving monument in the form of an inventory to the exquisite ordinariness of existence.
